We had our Padouk hardwood floors sanded and refinished one year ago. In several areas that have had more sun exposure the colour has changed dramatically to a weathered silver/black/brown colour. The majority of the floor has remained a deep tomato colour.

We actually like the colour of the areas where it has changed: is there any way to get the areas that are not exposed to the sunlight to the same colour?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Gordon

Well, the colour change is due to a reaction of the pigments in the wood to exposure to ultra-violet radiation from the sunlight.
The only way you could accomplish this artificially would be to set up a bunch of tanning lamps over the areas you wish to fade. Not really practical, and I am not sure this would work. Although I have successfully matured Jatoba, etc., this way when pre-maturing boards for repairs to existing pre-finished floors.

Cool ideas there Dennis. How long to reach the color you wanted?

During the summer in Las Vegas you can lay a Jatoba board in direct sunlight , it will age a year in a matter of hours  I haven't tried, but you could probably fry an egg on it, before you install it  .

Usually takes no more than two hours in a tanning booth for Jatoba to reach full maturity.
Ya that Las Vegas thing wouldn't work up here, our sunlight is pretty feeble at the best of times, lol.
