Now I have VERY noticeable dark streaks in some areas where the mop was wettest. Will this dry out even or has the damage been done? What are my options? I haven't put the finish down yet (was planning on WB).

Thanks,
Todd

You will need to re-stain the floor and hope and pray that it will get better. By getting the floor wet before staining, you caused the wet parts to "open up" or have the grain raise, which ALWAYS will cause the stain to take darker. If re-staining doesn't help, then you will need to re-sand.

Re-sand I did. This time the stain absorbed perfectly. I finished with Bona Mega and it looks awesome.

Prior to all this I did read that you should dampen the tack cloth with water for WB finishes and mineral spirits for oil based finishes, I just figured it would be ok to use water-dampened sponge if I let the floor dry real good before applying the oil based stain. I for sure didn’t realize what the consequences would be. It was a lesson I won’t forget.
