Trying to give you all full details, so bear with me on the length of the post.

I had the original oak floors in my 1989 home here in Connecticut sanded and refinished with 3 coats of Absco oil poly 7 weeks ago. I continue to have poly beads coming up through the board cracks in every room on both floors all day long, every day. I previously thought it was done and cleaned everything up with paint thinner, but it started again 10 days ago and hasn't stopped since.

Spoke to my floor guy at length and the very few times he's seen this in his 20 years of doing floors, it happened once and stopped; which a scrape/screen/recoat always fixed. From what I've found online, he did pretty much everything correctly - waiting 24-48 hours between coats, surface dried to the touch within hours, sanded/dusted well; indicating they did not apply too much poly, nor in improper conditions.

Environment-wise, the central A/C is locked at 73 across the house and avg. humidity is around 40-50. I've been keeping the windows closed to prevent drastic shifts in temp/humidity as that definitely contributes to the problem when the boards contract and then swell. It definitely gets worse when it's humid or raining outside, even with the A/C on.

I am desperately looking for advise on what I can do to get the poly left between the boards to finally dry 100%. We are trapped in the bedroom and can't use the rest of the house because we're ruining the finish by stepping on and smearing the poly everywhere. And I don't know if I can ever screen/recoat to correct the smears because this may happen all over again.

Thanks in advance for any help/advise.

The floor is moving because its the season for them to do so, rain and humidity will make it happen for sure. I honestly would say its not going to stop till the floor has tightened up all the way. Their are ways to prevent in the future, full trowel fill or a fast drying sealer/rolled application vs mop would have helped but is a mute point now. The few I have seen as well only did it for a week or two and then it stopped. Its going to be related to the size of the cracks and how much finish sunk down in there.

Thanks. I don't believe they used a mop, it was rollers and brushes.

Since it's been almost 2 months and it's still coming up steadily across the house every day, what else can I do to speed the drying and board swelling process? Only idea I have left is fans to keep the air moving, but I'm going to need like 10 of them (2300+ sq/ft of flooring) and not even sure that airflow will help the underlying (no pun intended) issue.

Rolling should have limited the amount that has pooled down in the cracks, which of course is a good thing. Fans should help and fresh air exchange will also help. Hvac recirculates most of the air to be more efficient, if you can crack the windows for a while that also could help along with the fans. Its a rare thing, hard to guess how long because we only see it once every couple years.

Ok, I'm off to buy more fans.

At this point, the A/C has been running for nearly 2 weeks and it's been somewhat humid/rainy out, so the boards are in a fairly expanded state (hence why it beads every day). My main question at this point is what the optimal environmental conditions are - it seems like I have 2 choices:

Leave as-is and run fans with the windows open
As you said, they'll eventually dry this way, but if they dry in this expanded state and the poly glues the boards together, will it cause sidebonding or panelization when they shrink again? This potential concerns me as then I am into replacing/repairing floors vs. just superficial issues.

Run dehumidifiers to dry/shrink the boards again
This would (theoretically) stop the beading and allow more air in, but my concern here is that I'll get another eruption when they do eventually swell again.

Thoughts on how to best condition the house to dry quickly and mitigate other potential issues?

sounds like you have been doing a fair amount of reading if you have learned about side bonding and panelization. Fortunately oil based finishes should break and not bond the boards together, that's more a characteristic found in waterborne finishes. You dont really need need to keep the windows open all the time just long enough for the air to clear any solvents evaporating out an hour should suffice.

I've scoured the internet and read every post I could find here! I trust my floor guy, but he simply doesn't have experience with recurring beading like this and is stumped.

The clarification between water and oil-based "gluing" the boards together definitely puts me at ease that I won't end up with worse problems than I already have - thank you. I'll likely just stay the course, leaving the A/C on while getting more fresh air circulating and hope it stabilizes over the next few weeks.

In the 20+ year I've been doing flooring, I have had it happen about 3 times.

Just recently, but I feel was not the result of our own doing. The owner had another crew who botched the floors and tried to do them over 3 times and continuously putting on coats of poly each time.

When we were recommended to come in, we redid the job and matched the color for the owner.

As the flooring was being sanded we noted bleedback between the boards of poly.(not stain).

was like an oil seaping.
At this point we noted and had to continue paying attention during stain application to handsand the bleedback so color would take.

well..everything went smoothly.

1 month later under same conditions and with all the humidity and rain we had in NJ, I got the call.

I instructed what to do in the meantime and advised that we wouldn't bother coming out for any rectifications until it stopped.

The best thing to do is stay on top of it, wipe them with mineral spirits while still gooey.
When they dry, use a credit card or plastic spackle knife and just scrape them off..they don't bond well and pop right off and do not cause any harm to the existing finish from my experience. a recoating should not be needed.

in our case we inherited it, but will go back and do we need to do for our client..
