I am thinking of getting some engineered hickory with an oil finish. How often should you re-oil, and can you change the floor color with a tinted oil. What is a good brand oil to use.

The oil seals the wood. Any other coat over the top will just wear off, if there is any color change. Oil finishes penetrate the surface and excess is buffed off during application. Once the first coat has cured any more oil will not penetrate.

If you're referring to a hardwax oil, I'd suggest re oiling about every 3-5 years. You can buff and apply a different shade if it's a hardwax. However, since the other finish will still be there, then it won't have a huge impact on color, but it will change a bit.

If you are referring to an oil polyurethane, I'd suggest buffing/recoating every 5-10 years. If you have pets, kids etc maybe a little more often. You can buff and then apply a universal sealer that is tinted with a dye to alter the color later, but it's pretty tricky. It's not impossible though.

Hope this helps.
