About a month ago my friend and I refinished his white oak floor. The floor was drum sanded with 36 grit, 60, and then 80. It was also edged with the same grits, and screened with 100 grit prior to staining. We used minwax stain and minwax fast drying satin. The stain went on well and was given 24 hours to cure prior to coating with poly. The first coat of poly went on well, with some minor bubbling. We screened with 220 grit screen and then re applied.
The floor looked pretty good after the second coat went on but there was some spots my buddy was not happy with, so he paid a professional in the area to come back and screen and recoat the entire floor to eliminate some of the applicator marks and lines we were leaving during the application. He applied masterline polyurethane in satin.
After he left and the floors dried everything looked really good, however over the last month spots on the floor have began to chip and flake away, and the top coat does not seem to be as resilient as it should be. I have attached a photograph of what I am talking about. There are basically spots like this in every room in the house, some worse than others. The finish seems to keep flaking off if you pick at it in these spots.
Is there a solution for this? What could have caused this to occur. It seems like the only coat this is coming off is the top coat, the two coats that we did seem to be fully adhered.
