Hey folks,

I'm looking for help identifying the hardwood in my living room. The house was built in 1960-1961 and I'm quite positive the floor is original to the home. It's 3/4 x 2 1/4.

I believe red oak but a google search for 1950's hardwood floor had me thinking it also kind of looks like maple!

Thanks for the wisdom!

Definitely not oak. Could be second grade maple if there are mineral streaks or burls. A lot of maple sold today is sap maple and more whiter.
Red oak is more orange looking. White oak has different grain pattern, too.

Awesome, thanks for the response Pete! I meant to share another shot from a bit further back. Seems to be closer to some of the characteristics you mention.

I was hoping to find some of this to match up in the dining room. Guess I better start knocking on neighbors doors and looking under their old carpets

Hoping I can finish what I have up nice. I'll start searching the forum for more advice on that.

Thanks again Pete!

Thanks Ken! And thanks again Pete for your knowledge as well.

I went to a local flooring supplier and looked at some samples. That's when I saw the birch. I'll tell you to the untrained eye (me) I still could have convinced myself it was maple. But one thing is for certain, I can definitely see the differences in all of the above from oak now.

Anyway, locals said most likely birch as it was very common at that time around these parts North of the border from New England.
