Hello all. I just started refinishing the hardwoods in the house I bought because there were a lot of stains and deep scratches. I like dark stain, so I decided to go with Dark Walnut by Minwax.
My issue is this: when I cleaned up some drywall dust in one of the rooms, I used a slightly damp sponge. I realize my mistake now that I have dark sponge marks over half of the floor in my dining room. Also, parts of the floor did not take stain as well as the others.
Will applying a second coat of stain fix these issues?

Thanks.

When you wet the floor it opens the grain, so it will accept the stain more on the area that was wet, thus becoming darker.
For a consistent look either wipe the entire floor and stain it after it dries , or not.

Another coating of stain probably would not help. When staining you must have the perfect sand job to get the stain completely even. So more than likely the floor did not have the perfect sand job. I would resand it. We use this sanding progression when staining; 50 grit drum sand, 50 edge sand, 80 edge sand, 80 drum sand, then palm sand all of the edges with a 60 grit and finally buff with an 80 grit sanding screen. Also it helps to wipe down the floor with water prior to staining to open the pores of the wood.
