I have some red oak floors which I did maybe 15 years ago with Oil based Varathane, The are a very LIGHT amber yellow which I really love. In fact most older red oak floors have this light amber tone.

The new(current) formuation of Varathane yeilds a complete diffrent dark yellow tone, I hate this tone. Most of the other oil poly's I have tried did the same thing. Are there any oil based poly finishes that yeild the old school type light yellow down vs so many of the finishes which seem dark on red oak?

if you look into a can of the old formulations you can actually see the bottom of the can through the resin. The new ones are very dark and opaque. If you puddle the finish it actually looks dark.

I hate the new formulation so much I am willing to redo the finish to rid my house of it.

You might be in a low voc state where all the oil based poly has to be under 350 voc's now, which equals thick poly with a more opaque look. If you are in California or the upper NE then you might be able still to find the good stuff in quarts still. Gallons are outlawed in these areas but there is some stupid quart exemption loophole.

sounds to me you are just experiencing aging and yellowing of your currently finish...

any new finish will be true and more honey in tone..

in my experience it don't matter what type of oil base you put down..the color will be the same on a fresh sanded job.

clear is clear..there are no toners in them.
