Installed 3/4" unfinished white oak flooring last July on 1/2" plywood. I was VERY liberal in the use of shanked nails on the subflooring and staples on the tongue and grooved oak. Over the past few weeks I've noticed the floor popping loudly at random times of the day, sometimes at night when its cooler and sometimes in the morning as it warms up. It has not done this until recently as the summer temps have declined.

Of note...... I butted the plywood end to end and did not leave much of a gap. Not sure if that could come into play, but I figured I mention it. Any ideas, advice, etc...?

Well, hard to say if everything was installed properly. Assuming it was, bottom line, all wood moves, expands and contracts with changes in temp and humidity. That's why it is recommended to keep RH between 40 and 60 % with 45 to 50 % ideal. See if it settles down over the next 6 to 12 months and keep your temp and humidity even.

Probably nothing to worry about. My guess would be daytime heating (sunlight) and night time cooling causing the pops. Wood will react to temperature swings in that manner.

I certainly did the install 'by the book' and am super anal about details. I believe the install was done properly, actually above par.

Thanks for the responses guys. I also thought it was due to temp changes as it has gotten cooler in these parts (Portland) lately. I just needed some reassurance that all those hours of work weren't going to end in a buckled floor.

Thanks.

I am going to put down a 3/4" oak prefinished floor. It has to be glued down to a concrete subfloor. I have installed plenty of floating floors but never a hardwood glued to concrete. I sthere anything i should really know about before I start and can i go tight around the hearth. thanks

Shacky, You can write me a check for the full turn key cost of that job, and then not do it. Sure would save you a lot of wasted time and beats just throwing it out the window.!
