Hello,

Just had new hardwood installed. Yesterday. Now there is a thin layer of dust I have to remove. The installers swept away the majority. How should I do this without damaging my new floor? I was thinking of using water and a mop. Using hand soap as the cleaner. Keeping the mop only vaguely wet. As we all know too much water is bad.

I don't have a Swiffer WetJet. Or I would use that as it controls the amount of liquid that hits the floor. Or is that a bad idea?

Please recommend.

I would always avoid water, even barely damp mopping, to make sure you don't run into any warranty issues. And any soap is definitely not advisable. Stick with Bona No Wax hardwood cleaner or Basic Squeaky Clean. Before using either of those though, I would vacuum with a hard floor attachment to get as much of the dust as possible. If not, you may end up with some minor scratching, or drive some of the dust into the grain, especially on distressed or scraped floors.

Just bought the same thing. A Swiffer WetJet. I even bought a bottle of their solution made for hardwood. On the WetJet box they stress their solution (regular one) is okay as well. The Bona is a copy. :) Actually found the Bona online Googling before I left the house today. But had a feeling I'd have a hard time finding it.

The floor has been swept very well. There's just a fine layer of dust. Though in some areas thick enough to draw your name with your finger.

Thanks for your advice.

Joke? No joke. Why? As I said the solution used is okay for hardwood. It's the design Bona copied. :) With a slight change in their own solution I'm sure.

Just did 2 rooms. Did a great job removing the layer of dust left from yesterday's hardwood install. Though most of the heavy dust was swept away already. There was just a thin layer to move. Glad I bought it.

Hope its not a prefinished. Seen lots of manufactures deny claims from using that machine.

That was before probably. Not now. Besides that Bona machine is a copy as I said. And I on the WetJet box it specifically says it's okay for hardwood. And have a solution "made for" hardwood.

What would you use to remove a thin layer of dust from an install? Any good ideas?? :)

You better check with your manufacture if its prefinished. It don't matter what the machine manufacture says. LOL Inspectors love them. Even laminate manufactures deny claims with those. I have taken many a picture of a swiffer jet in homes.

In my house and on jobs I use the old fashioned janitorial dry mop (3 ft wide) with Velva-Sheen dry mop treatment (janitorial supply). Then I vacumm one a week cus I have beveled edged pre-waxed hardwood.

True, True. In the end it's what the manufacturer of the wood says. Which happens to be Vintage btw. A very good brand.

Hmmm 3 foot dry mom and Velva-Sheen. Sure after the floor has been cleaned no doubt. But I'm asking about the day after an install. When there is a mm or two of dust you want to remove. Still just use a dry mop? What kind of cleaning solution would you recommend that is readily available at lets say a Home Depot. Or just not hard to find for the rest of us. I don't usually go looking for "janitorial supplies". Nor would the rest of us. :)

And why would you be taking "many a picture of a Swiffer jet in homes"? For kicks? HEHE!! :)

First of all.....first you need to get the dust off before you use any liquid or you will be working it into the joints. So dust mop, then vacumm with NO beater bar. Buy a soft attachment for vacumm. Then you can use the cleaner with micro fiber pad. Dint that high end manufacture give you ANY maintenance instructions????

You would be surprised at how close the nearest janatorial supply is to you.

Pictures, I got plenty of pictures cus I did inspections for awhile till I got sick of all the bull that goes with it. Claims for swollen joints with a swiffer jet involved always got denied. Gee Ma'am...how are you cleaning this floor, can I see your swiffer jet"? LOL

Course engineered wood is not supposed to delaminate. Least not quality ones or so they say.

Get use to it. You will drive yourself nuts trying to constantly dust, a dark wood floor.

All that stuff that use to collect in your carpets, are now collecting on the wood floors.
Air borne dust gets kicked up real easy just from normal foot traffic, on hard surface flooring like wood. Where as the carpet trapped it until you vacuumed to remove it.

I get calls all the time after an installation asking how to eliminate the constant dust collection on the wood floors. Only from consumers that have never had wood flooring before. I explain, your not. It is going to come to how much it bugs you to how often you dust the floor.

Yes, it sure lets you realize how much dirt your carpet was hiding. People are happy to get rid of the carpet and dust mites and smelly yuky carpet. practially every client I have spoken to that had carpet says they feel better and have less allergy problems.

Yes, they have been brainwashed into thinking that, and once it is done, they feel better to satisfy their trained brain that thinks it is so, because they just spend a shit load of cash, because everyone said....

Rumors and hearsay. Ever do the name change game? Sit in a circle with all your friends and whisper something in the ear of the person next to you and they the person next to them, as it makes it around the circle and back to you, it is not what was said.

Independent non-biased studies in Sweden have shown just the opposite. Carpet and its static properties, attract and actually HOLD dust and allergens even with normal foot traffic, until the carpet is vacuumed, which removes them.

Hard surface on the other hand, the dust and allergens are on the surface as the poster has noticed. The HVAC kicking on, ceiling fans and normal foot traffic stirs the dust and allergens, making the become airborne for hours, until they settle on the floor again.

The main cause of allergy related claims in homes, comes from the HVAC air ducts. Air ducts in homes older homes 5 years and up, have up to 1000 times more Mold spores, pollen, dust and allergens, then a carpet that is vacuumed once a year.

I had it all saved and bookmarked on my old Win 95 computer, but I don't have it on this box.

Studies done by carpet manufactures or paid for by tham always say that.

Fact is people clean more often with hard surface than carpet, they lay on it, it is full of junk and dust mite feces among other things.

Don't ever believe the CRI people, you know they are owned by carpet mills.

Just heard from Vintage. The brand of hardwood I had installed. Turns out they make their own cleaner solution. So I'll order from them. And yes they did offer the same advice to clean after an install. Which is to dry mop and vacuum. Then use a cleaner.

Thanks guys. Enjoy your hardwood as I will be. :)
