I am new to this forum and so far great info. I have a few questions and pictures for those that know the answer.
- The floor was laid and finished on site, twice! I'll get to that later.
- I live in the mountain west, and choose this floor to be installed in a new home this year.
- The floor is walnut, allegedly sealed and two coats of industrial poly, not sure of the brand, blue container?
- Stairs are lacquered...looks crummy to me.

1. Should there be visible small holes where the finish soaked into the grain? (see picture)
2. This floor was finished twice, the first time was absolutely horrible. The floor was laid and remained unprotected for two weeks of daily tile and trim work. The tile cutter was placed directly on the bare wood and dug holes and scratches into the planks and also created puddles of water in two locations. The floor guy finished the floor without sanding it again, lowest bidder for the builder I guess! So he poly-ed the entire floor, scratches and water damage included. Needless to say we were livid the next day we walked through.
3. What can one do to clean up a horrible looking transition between tile and wood? (see pictures) And, is this acceptable work quality to you? (see pictures)
4. Is this a normal color to fill knots in walnut, looks very light to me, anyone feel the same? (see pictures)
I appreciate any and all replies, feedback and advise, thanks.

the finish looks fine...
thats normal..wont get a complete "laminated" over effect with poly..the only thing that can tone that donw is an aditonal coating or 2..that would have to paid for.

as for the transitions, those are ruff cut due to the hardness of the species...so when cutting those arcs..although very minor, wood can chip,,,,even using a scroll saw or router to do it..

tape may have helped this ...covering the cut to be made with tape...or possibly pre -sanding the boards..to correct the chipping before installed..once in...it would be near impossible to correct that..unless using some filler..

now leading to that..yes the filler is light for such a large fill void....especially is it were a knot...even if using a "walnut filler" suggest the best fill application would have been Glitza wood flour...epoxy mix...this may correct the transition to tile too..

i would suggest that the board actually be changed..should probably have not made it into the floor unless used in a closet or used as a started board and the knot cut off.

the tile stair transition can be corrected with matching color caulk of grout...and possibly a little more attention to detail in the cleaning of it.

Is it quality work? well that is subjective...to some this may be very high..and to some completely unacceptable.

remember this...quality work is not received if not payed for...and in this day and age...nobody seems to want to pay for it..

if it is unacceptable to you, you don't need someone's affirmation....

The radius could have been better if they made a cut in it with a utility knife first. Otherwise all the rest is normal cept for some grout caulking around the stair.
