I'm buying a small house with hardwood floors in the entrance hall and living room. I don't know anything about the type of hardwood floor it is. Would you suggest that, before I move in, I should sand it down and put on a coat of gloss or a something to protect it with? Thanks.

why not?...that's like asking if you shouldn't paint....

This is he best idea to anybody moving in to the new house. You don't need to spend extra time taking furniture out, you also don't need to go for vacation or to your friends or to the hotel because people would work in your house. Plus you would know how your real floor looks like))).
