I am in an older house. Want to remove carpet in hallway and install hardwood floor. I am new to this but am willing to take the time to do it right.

Measurements are L 10 ft W 3 ft.

I go to lift the carpet and discover that there is a hardwood floor under it!

Of course they put on tack strips. Glue and stuff all over the thing. First thought I had was: Do I try to remove these tack-strips and glue and refinish it to use it? Or do I simply install a new hardwood floor over it?

The rest of the house has this tile type flooring on a concrete foundation. Very strange.

Anyway. Need some suggestions on how to go about doing this. It is a modest house 2 bedroom. Kitchen almost shares the living room. The living room is all parquet.

I am thinking if i lay padding and hardwood over the old existing hardwood it could be uneven unless I sand of the glue.

What would be the best thing to?

On a side note. Can you install a hardwood floor on concrete flooring so to do it without nails? With some other type of special glue?

Is the house on a slab or does it have a craw space? If you are on concrete, you need to use an engineered wood, and you should remove all old flooring if you are going to do a glue down. If you just want to clean it up and put something over the old floors, you should use a product designed to float.
