Hi;

Wondering if I can do this without future issues. Details;

- Family room is over an unfinished basement.
- There are 2 layers of plywood, perp. to joists. Total ~3/4"
- Joists are 2x8, 16oc with longest span 11'
- There's currently an engineered 3/16" maple floor, stapled down over 15 lb. felt
- The maple floor is perp. to the joists.

Customer wants to put new floor down. Adjacent room is going to have tile. IF I can put new floor over the existing maple, then it will work out where the wood and tile are about the same height. I would want to lay the new floor perp. to the existing floor and therefore parallel to the joists. Which is not ideal. Leaning towards 5/8" vertical grain bamboo. I will make sure to use long enough nails or staples to go through the maple floor and into the subfloor.

If I can do this a decent amount of expense and $$ can be spared.

Thanks.......
Kevin

You can go either way to the joists orientation just having two layers of plywood. The maple enginnered floor is just like another layer of plywood. If you use 2" fasteners you should be good to go.

Are you positive it is 3/16"???

Sure it isn't 5/16, or 3/8. 3/16 is the top veneer on some floors.

with only 8" joists, spanning 11 feet and only ¾" and a thin engineered, I'd be leary about going the same direction as the joists.

If it was a solid and not an engineered, I would recommend going the opposite direction, or at an angle to the existing flooring.

Since there is more shrink and swell in the length of an engineered than the width and your using a bamboo solid, I would go the same direction as the engineered wood is.

Sorry, it is 5/16", mis-typed.

I agree. You will be just fine going parallel to the joists since you have the layer of flooring. With leaving the existing flooring down, I believe it will actually be better to go the opposite direction of the existing flooring.
