I know that Fir is one of the softest wood floors. However, we moved into a new house with custom selected Douglas Fir floors. Well, the floors dent from absolutely anything. If you drop a hanger they dent. Someone walked into the house and there was a pebble lodged in their shoe and that left little dents all over the house. Is this normal? Can we have it coated with multiple extra commercial grade finished to protect it? Please advise. Thank you!

My experiences show the harder the finish has little to no effect on the hardness of the wood sorry

Pebbles in shoes will dent even very hard, hardwoods. It's like walking on your floors in track or golf shoes; maybe worse. People from cultures that take off their shoes when they enter a home have floors in much better condition. Consider a no shoe policy and provide slippers for guests.

Thank you all for your responses. But is it really this difficult to manage? I have had wood floors in other homes for years, and they didn't dent like this. With these floors I have dropped a soft-covered book and it leaves a dent. Is that really expected? I would have thought that with some extra layers of finish - the finish would bare more of the wear and it might protect the wood more.

The extra finish will not protect the floors from denting. :(

I conducted a scientific test on this question. I applied 5 coats of satin poly on my big toe, then I dropped a book on it.

It didn't help any

Wood dents.
Softer wood is a bit quieter than harder woods as sound is absorbed a bit better with softer wood flooring, if that is any consulation.
