The floor is in decent shape. It does have some dark stains from liquids that were spilt. If I use 180 or 220 grit sand paper and "scuff" off the finish, will I be able to use the cherry stain (Minwax 235 Cherry) to darken and hide the water stains? I am trying to avoid having to use a rented floor sander to refinish. Since the floors are relatively light to begin with, I was hoping that I could scuff/remove the clear coat finish and then re-stain with the cherry and put polyurethane on. Does that make sense, or is it something that I am going to have to end up renting a floor sander? Any other ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

when we do refinish we use for first cut 40 or 50 grid paper, and for final sand we use 80 or 100 grid. 180-220 we use only for buffing between coats of finish.
I think you have to rent the drum sander.
