The room dimensions for my hardwood install are 13.5' x 33'. My plan is to install 3/4" red oak unfinished on a 45 degree angle. Joists are 16" OC and subfloor is 5/8" OSB with 3/4" plywood on top, so floor should be sufficient to handle the 45 degree install. Using pythagorean theorem from my long ago geometry days, the perpendicular wall to wall run of boards will be just over 19'-1". My question is will I need to use any spacers in the field to accommodate expansion, or is leaving 1/2" gap around the perimeter sufficient?
