Hello Robert,
If I may add a few things. I'm not sure in what part of the country you live but here in Florida the soil is very sandy, especially closer to the beach. Resist sliding things across your wood floor. Even soft items can leave scratches if there is any grit trapped under them. Rugs placed at entry points from the outside will help trap dirt and grit. For the inevitable scratch a matching color stain pen can help hide it. Otherwise we call this "character".
Obviously moisture is an enemy of the wood floor. Throw rugs placed in front of sinks in kitchens or bathrooms (if your wood floor goes there) will help to absorb any liquid spilled. "But I wanted wood floors. Why do I have all these rugs laying around?!" Consider the decorative side of them. Choose rugs that are colorful or artistic to your liking. These will not only be functional but accent your floors and living space with style and charm.
Is there a woman in your world? BEWARE of women's narrowly pointed high heeled shoes. With the right pair of heels she will be leaving a trail of "character" in your wood floor with every step she takes! But seriously, it depends on the hardness of your floor and most heels are wide enough not to leave dents... but if you are entertaining, keep your eyes peeled for the heels. I have seen this happen a few times.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your hardwood floors! They are the best.
