I need a few good boards! My home has Goodfellow 3 5/8" wide by 5/8" thick carbonized vertical bamboo throughout. I need to replace some damaged boards, and I have none left over from the installation in 2004. I am looking for a source of flooring since Goodfellow no longer makes the 3 5/8". Everything now is 3 3/4". I need 50 - 100 square feet of 3 5/8" flooring.
Many thanks,
- Bill

Did you give them a call if they still had some in stock?

Yes, I have spoken with folks at Goodfellow. I had asked if maybe they had a box or two hiding in the corner of a dusty warehouse - but no, they don't. I have also tried a local (Albany, NY) Lumber Liquidators and they can offer no help. So, I am grasping at straws at the moment - hoping there might be a few boxes left over from a job somewhere.
Do you have any other ideas as to where I might look?
- Bill

Thanks, Jeff. Good idea .. but I am afraid of that urethane part. I have not had good luck with oil based urethane over factory finished bamboo. It gets all mottled looking and I cannot duplicate the satin finish of factory. I am told that is because the factory finish has aluminum oxide in it.
I have also found that if I sand carbonized bamboo to bare wood, application of oil based urethane makes the wood much darker than that which exists in the factory process. (Would water based urethane be better?) I may try your suggestion on a few boards just to see how noticeable it would be - if I can be careful with a tiny brush and only hit the beveled edge.

I just mean dab some on the new bevel to protect the unfinished wood not on the whole board. Use water a based finish. if you can keep it on the bevel no one will ever know.

Hello Bill,

Jeff is right a good installer can use any 5/8" vertical Carbonized bamboo and make it work for the repair. The tongue groove profile can be adjusted with a router to make it work with your existing bamboo flooring. Just so you know the new batch of bamboo flooring may be a darker or lighter tone than what you have now. If you pull up complete rows of the old flooring an re-install the new flooring you can keep the 3 3/4" inch width without ripping it down and take the new flooring all the way to the ending wall. Re-installing a full row is allot easier than taken out 100sqft of individual boards. Most people won't notice the slight 1/8" difference in board width. Every repair is different and the best advice is always given onsite.

Just my thoughts hope it works out for you.

Thanks for the encouragement. Unfortunately, there are about 48 boards that are involved in damage, and the boards run lengthwise in the room - so no long end-to-end runs in this case.
Any hints for putting urethane on the new bevel? I assume that I don't need many coats since the bevel is not in direct wear contact. What I am concerned about is getting the bevel protected but not getting urethane on the main part of the board. Got any tricks for applying it? Taping it gets kinda fussy. Maybe there is a fairly firm applicator that would do the job of hitting just the bevel. (I wish there were urethane "sticks" like ski wax that I could just rub the edge with and have it harden to protect.)

Hello CyanAura,

I would suggest applying the water base floor finish with a think paint brush to the bevels.
