I jus begun the process of putting in new hardwood flooring, actually I just begun the process of removing the parquet flooring that I currently have. This stuff is imposible to remove, it's that stuff that is finger like strips and it's been glued down for over 30 years, it's literally ripping up chunks of the subflooring when I scrape it up.

Can I just put my new floor right on top of the parquet? The parquet is in good shape and the floor is flat, I'm using 3/4ths toung and groove that I'll be stapling down, I know it will save me about 100 hours of work and possibly having to replace a lot of my sub flooring but I don't want to do it if it's not a good idea.

thanks!

Sounds like "Pitbull" is the proper name or tool for taking up that floor !

NWFA states ..."Wood Flooring can be nailed to old wood floors by sanding high spots and laying the floor crossing both existing wood floor and the joists at a 45 degree or greater angle to avoid laying parallel to joists or existing floor. Adding an additional underlayment ( minimum 3/8" ) allows for the floor to be installed in any direction"

So I would say yes , lay over the parque. You shouldn't have to worry about direction as far as the parque is concerned. But I would install a plywood underlayment, over the parquet, if your planning on running parallel to joists.
I would also figure on using longer fasteners to bite into the existing subfloor.

as long as I was running perpendicular to the joists, I would just use 15# felt paper and some 2" staples and go to town. Make sure to check your doors before you start. Interior doors and bi-folds are no big deal to cut, but exterior doors and french doors can require a little more experience.

What we have found in the past, when looking for opportunities to cut corners, was that parquet is NOT a suitable sub-strate for the installation of nail-down floors. Most of the fillets have vertically oriented grain, and tend to split when nailing through them on an angle. This can cause squeaking that cannot be corrected.
But, perhaps the addition of plywood over the parquet may be a solution. Our own was to walk away from any job where removal of the parquet was not in the budget.
