we are going to install new flooring - the existing is 3/8" strip over 3/4" pine subfloors. Too many sqeaks to count right now. Choices are:
1 - rip up existing strips, screw down existing subfloor, install new 3/8" flooring
2 - screw through existing strips, install new 3/8" flooring
3 - rip up existing strips, screw down existing subfloor, install 3/8" CDX plywood (glued/screwed to existing subfloor), install new 3/8" flooring.
4 - rip up existing strips, screw down existing subfloor, install new 3/4" flooring
Option 1 is not preferred as there is a elevation difference into the tiled bathrooms - adding 3/8" overall will fix that problem.
Option 4 is not preferred due to cost of 3/4" solid flooring.
So the question realy is - does it make sense to go through the work of ripping up the old strips and adding the plywood?
Then the next question - use solid or engineered wood, and if engineered how many plys, and either way, how many year warranty is really important?
Thanks!
