3/4" by 3 1/4 solid hardwood on 3/4" fir CDX plywood subfloor. This is to be instaled in a log home so there are no baseboards or shoe moldings along the walls. on the long edges I plan to scribe a special cover strip to cover the 3/4" expansion gap that runs the length of the flooring strips along those (East and West) walls.

I would like, however, to just scribe fit the ends of the strips to the walls (North and South) that those strip ends will be fitting against instead of providing an expansion gap along that wall. My theroy is that the strips of flooring will not expand accross their length but only accross their width.

so the question is do I need to provide expansion gaps along the ends of the strips as well as anong the sides?

The wood is cut and dead, it will expand very little in the length. Barely measurable.
Bamboo on the other hand will expand in the length.

No expansion needed at walls where floor butts to it. Only across the width. This is true only for solid products. Most engineered floor, depending on construction, will need expansion on all walls and obstructions
