I am almost ready to purchase hardwood flooring for approx. 1300 sq ft of space. The kitchen is part of this area and has natural maple cabinets with browns in the granite throughout. We really like the look of a natural hickory 5'' wide floor but I am concerned of not enough contrast. What about gunstock (hickory/maple)? Any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Well, for whatever it's worth  I always tell people " you dont want it to look like you tried to match it but didnt quite make it", so it sounds to me like your going in the right direction. Totally a matter of taste. But I have all types of "lighter woods" in my home, and I think they look great together, they all compliment eachother. Personally I dont prefer dark or medium with light. I also prefer "unstained" woods, for the natural look.
But hey...I'm no inferior designer

Agree'd with Howard. But I have dark stained oak, hides the dirt.
