Since I am putting the floor in at a 45 degree angle to the walls, I can only get the nailer to about 9 to 10 inches from the wall. Is it necessary to hand nail close to the edge?

I use a pneumatic finish nailer to nail closer to the ends when installing on a 45. I prefer 2" 15 gauge finish nails by Senco. OR, you could cut back whatever paper you are installing over about 2 or 3" and run a bead of urethane construction adhesive on the subfloor.

What Gary said.
Personally, I think just gluing in those final short pieces in the two opposing corners is sufficient.
Along the two walls, just use your finish nailer as suggested.

Sorry to bring up an old topic but I'm also planning a 45 deg install and had an additional question/clarification.

When you mention using a 15 ga finish nailer near the ends close to the wall, are you talking about face nailing or using the finish nailer to nail the tongue at the appropriate angle?

If it is face nailing, is it wise to try and nail close to the edge in hope the base shoe will cover it or will I end up splitting the ends of the board?

By the way my application is 3/4" pre-finished brazillian cherry. Subfloor is a layer of 1/2" plywood over 3/4" plywood. Room is about 12' x 13'.

Thanks

Use the finish nailer to fasten about 2 - 3 inches from the end of the board, but through the tongue same as the flooring nailer. No closer to the end, either on the surface or through the tongue since this will inevitably cause a split.
