I have a slab that we are putting 5/8 ply on so I can have a thin solid wood placed on top.

From reading these forums it seems you guys prefer the painted on sealers followed by glue to secure the plywood to the slab.

The instructions on this sight mention the plastic and nails to secure the ply to the concrete.

Which is better-Do the nails not do a good job on their own holding the subfloor?

If I were to go this route my choices are mvp, sika, franklin and durabond according to the manufacturer.

Which is the best deal per sq feet?

Have you considered just buying an engineered wood product and gluing it directly down to concrete?

Why spend the time and money to glue plywood down to concrete, and then have to install and nail the floor on top of that?

Engineered wood was designed to glue down to concrete so you don't have to go to the time and expense to create a plywood subfloor if you live on a slab.

Personally, I do both. Use a system of moisture proofer and adhesive by either Taylor, Franklin, Sika or Bostik's. Then nail it as well. Here is an article by NOFMA re: installing a plywood underlayment as a nailing base over a concrete slab. Starts on pg. 3

Gary do you find the nailing the subfloor ALONE enough or does the floor feel loose and tend to pop up.

What would make you choose one route over the other?

Nailing alone is inadequate, IMO. The fasteners sometimes break loose overtime. Exception would be using concrete screws instead of nails.
I prefer to glue over nailing only. It's just a more solid connection. Costs more though.
