My search, here, says I have to remove a 1/2" particle board underlayment before laying a solid wood floor. I'm installing 3/4" #1 yellow pine, 6" plank; my first time. The subfloor is 1/2" plywood (as far as I can determine because I can't fine an edge to measure, so I did a drill job. Here's my question: is there any fastening method that will allow me to safely secure the floor to the 1/2" plywood topped with 1/2" particle board?

I'll be laying the pine perpendicular to the joists (16" on center).

I can't recommend anything but to tear out the particle board and replace it with 5/8" plywood.

Okay, I'll rip it out but just out of curiosity what is the risk of installing a solid wood floor over an underlayment of particle board?
