How do you guys move heavy furniture/appliances on a hardwood floor without scratching it? I will be installing new hardwood floors in the near future and this is one of the things I have been wondering about(will be doing my whole house)

Appliances, I use rubber wheels, and roll them over 1/4" masonite. Furniture, I use "sliders"( get the ones that come with the carpet socks). Or you can just use cut up squares of carpet ( fuzzy side down obviously). Make sure there's no grit in the carpet.

In the trade they're called "skates" . You slide them under both sides of the appliance, and roll them around. Probably not the best suggestion for DIU...they're quite expensive.

I imagine you could use a dolly. A lot of guys use these....http://www.tools4flooring.com/ez-moves- ... lides.html

"Slides" have been known to scuff finish, just as "skates" have been known to leave indentation roller marks. You always want to protect the floor with masonite or similar.

Thanks. Yes, I agree, using slides is good on carpet but I wouldn't just slide them over hardwoods.

Thats what the masonite is for, when moving appliances  And the sliders with "socks", moving furniture over hardwood.

Can you recommend a good pair of socks? :) We tried the ones from Home Depot which are plastic with slip-ons about the same shape that have elastic around the edges. The socks keep coming off. That was used on a bed.

Have 12 pair in my truck that I've been using for years. Don't know why your having that problem Selva.

Wellll.......Maybe cause I don't use them on beds. Beds typically have rollers, and will roll right off the sliders. Most folks break down beds, and carry them out of the room, ( their not heavy). Come to think of it......really haven't seen too many doorways that will accomodate a bed going through on sliders, and your best bet when installing hardwood is to remove the bed from the room.

Let me know before you try this type of stuff again Selva.....I'll try to help before you create a problem :)

This is a wooden bed. Sometimes I rearrange the room but now with the hardwoods instead of carpet I can't just slide it across the floor. They used these sliders with furry covers to move the bed around when the floor went down.

The darn covers slide right off very easily. I thought you might know a brand with better socks. Knee highs or something ;D

I have glides that instead of hard plastic or socks they are actually giant felt pads with the thick foam on top. I use them use them under fridges and any other furniture. Got them At either HD or Lowes can't remember which one.

I just used both the hard and felt yesterday. Plus don't forget that furniture lifter. The owner had one and it works great, saves your back. I lifted a huge dresser with a big mirror on it no problem. Didn't even need to break down the bed either.

Well that's a great tool! I was going under the bed with my legs and lifting with my thighs to get the sliders underneath. Not so bad to lift it that way but that'll be great for other heavy pieces.

Thanks!
