Putting solid wood t-molding across 4 foot hallway: do I cut for exact fit or leave an expansion gap and cover with quarter round?

I usually put the quarter round down first, and leave 3/4 gap (width wise) for the T part to sit in, then cut exact to fit to shoe molding, a little looser rather than tighter.

Cut it tight.
