I have a floor from 1960.Contractor says it's white oak.I want to add new hardwood to an adjoining hallway and I'd like it to be a close match as possible.Contractor originally ordered #1 common white oak but the supplier delivered red oak by mistake. He was professional and brought it to my attention.Thing is he can't get #1 common white oak at short notice that I need it installed ,but can get clear or select at his expense. Is it an acceptable match? He also mentioned that there probably wouldn't be a significant difference in that wood was graded a little differently and that a #1 in 1960 is probably a notch up from what it is today.Do you think that it will be a good match not going with #1 common white oak?

Your existing floor is 40+ years old. Whether or not the existing is #1 common or select and better, I doubt either will match perfectly. I have patched and added on to many older floors and the new wood never looked the same as the old. If you get a match in grain and color, it's pure luck. Staining the floors helps to have 'em match but is not a fixall. If you need to have it installed now and can't wait for the #1 common, have your contractor cherry pick the boards that look most like your old floor and put those boards where the new and old join. It will help the transition.
