Hi guys, im redoing a small 4 step staircase, and well i just took the carpet off and found pine treads with mdf risers (1/2"). Planning on putting full maple treads in to match the flooring and poplar (paint grade) risers, can i glue the poplar straight to the mdf or should i remove the mdf.

Its a boxed staircase with mortised stringers and i have no access to the bottom. Hoping i can get away with gluing the poplar riser as ive never done stairs before and am not looking forward to it.

BTW, I am going to assume, from what ive read so far, that i can get away with a couple coats of polyurethane to match the natural maple finish in the flooring (on the treads i mean as they are unfinished)

PS the stairs are impeding me from finishing the top floor install due to not knowing where to place the bullnose for the top step (because not sure how thick the riser will be)

i did peek under all risers and treads, all treads are pine and all risers are 1/2" mdf. The drywall bows about 3/8" on the left side and once i cut off the noses inm thinking i will have one ugly stringer, so im thinking of trying to cut a veneer skirting (i think thats what its called) and painting white an then capping off the top of the riser and then ofcourse baseboard on top of the stringer at the drywall.

Sorry bouyt the carpet, wife wanted to leave it on until i do thew stairs

Plastic filler / bondo, works wonders.

I'd glue and nail trough the MDF

That bottom step is going to be fun! I hate those.

imageshack is a good hosting site. No charge and you can link directly to multiple size images (thumbnails, mid-size, full-size, etc)

It's a bit of a PITA to use because there is no username/password system. You have to use the specific URL they assign to you for uploading pictures, but it works great.

It took a minute for them to load, just now. I had time to scroll down and read your last message, and went up to see fo myself, if the pictures where there. As I got up, the first one was ½ loaded and the others followed quickly.

As long as you like it, you can use anything you want, including stainless steel, plastic, or fabric.

Have you seen these riser accents?

If they are getting painted, I just use luan over the existing.

Birch or maple paints out nicer than "luan", a fake mahogany. And they are available in 1/4" plywood.
