Well, it has been decided to let someone more experienced finish the floor. The water based Duraseal didn't bring out the curl and birdseye like I wanted so I am now considering changing course and going to oil. The floor is maple with lots of curl and birdseye. It is sanded and has one thin coat of water based Duraseal sealer. It has been 4 months since the sealer went down.

I have had 4 contractors come to the house. All but one said that with some light sanding, I could go to an oil finish over water (I want the figure to come out more.) Half those I talk to on the phone say the same thing.

I know the rule of oil over water, but the sealer is well beyond cured, it was thin in the first place, and they have to rescreen anyway which will take most of the floor back to bare wood.

As long as I watch over them and make certain they sand every inch, am I okay with going to oil poly?

To be on the safe side, I would pay to have a resand/refinish. The reason is if not all the waterborne sealer is removed, the flooring will look considerably "different" where the oil based poly penetrates and where it cannot, due to the waterbased sealer. Trust me on this. It is not worth it to skimp out.
