Having a hard time finding a 5/8 teak or teak like stair nose. The stair nose would be for a single step going down into the basement.

The boards are going to running perpendicular to the stair.

Do I:

A) Extend boards over stairs, cut, then round of with router

B) Make stair nose out of 5/8" 3-1/4"Prefinished Teak

The was tile down before so the was not much over hang if I remember right.

You can use your flooring to make the nosing. First cut the tongue off the flooring. Then cut a strip of the flooring ¼” thick x 1 ¼”wide and the length you need. Glue the strip to the bottom edge of the flooring where the tongue was removed. Use a ½” Roundover router bit to round the top and bottom edge. Now you have a stair nosing.
The photos below show part of 160 liner feet of Ipe nosing I made for a job. I saved a bundle making it myself

Good luck with your project Erik!

And much thanks to BuddyJ for your reply. Your DIY stairnose and your work looks really great! I'm working up to my own stairs now and find that Bruce's"matching" stairnose doesn't match my wood at all; not even close! You've inspired me to try making my own stairnose. I am using 3/4" x 3-1/4" Prefinished Bruce Gentry / Ellington plank which has an antique, distressed finish with a lot of color variation and a urethane finish. I hope the following photo shows what I mean...

I would, of course, have to stain and refinish the rounded over bull nose and try to get it close to the prefinished wood. Any advice on what stain product/color I should try? Do you think refinishing just the nosing and not the entire board is possible?

Thanks for any advice and suggestions, ZT

You may be able to finish just the rounded area of the nosing. I have used blue tape on the pre-finished edge of the nosing and stained and finished only the rounded area. The hard part will be trying to match the distressed look. I would try to finish one completely so you will know if you can get it right before making all of them.

You may try Sherwin Williams for matching the stain. If you get the stain to match, next you will need to match the finish sheen. Usually two-component water-based finish will look very close to most prefinished with AO finish.

I would have to see the actual flooring to recomend a color, I looked at the photo below but could not guess the color or sheen.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks BuddyJ for your reply and advice ! I will give your method a try and see what happens.

I am not sure what you meant by "AO". Does this mean "Antique Oil" finish?

So I ripped the tongue off my wood and ripped 1.25" x .25" strips of wood. What kind of glue do you recommend to put them together with?
