I was looking at different flooring, when I came across this on a website:

"A construction detail worth noting is the increased amount of usable/sandable wood on this 3/4" thick floor. The tongue and groove have been placed lower on the plank leaving a thicker sandable surface which makes this 3/4 solid floor capable of an additional sanding in its lifetime, giving the floor an even longer service life. Specially designed relief cuts on the bottom are added to provide increased stability to the structure of the plank, giving it a lifetime structural warranty. Solid wood floors can be installed on or above grade over a wooden sub-floor. "

How can they do that without requiring modification of the nailer? Nowhere do they say that such modification is needed. I would guess that the thickness of a single sanding layer must not throw off a nail gun. Or, maybe, the nail gun will drive through the tongue at a somewhat more perpendicular angle since the edge of the nail gun won't nestle as nicely between the tongue and the top.

Comments?

Mosty t&g flooring is not center matched, its standard to have more material on the top of the tounge than below. Realistically most people will only refinish their floors once ,if ever, while living in the home. most move on to new homes far before the floor is sanded down to the nail heads more of a marketing tool imo.

Kevin is right I think about a sales gimmick. Go much lower with the tongue and the cleat or staple won't have enough wood to grab onto.

Sure, I understand that existing flooring is not center matched. But, when I read the ad, it appears to me that this company is saying that the T&G is lower than similar products.

That's exactly my question. Does it mess with the nail gun height settings or the nail angle throught the tongue.

Just odd.

How much do you have to work with on a staple down 3/8"

Just think, we could use 1" staples for 3/4" LOL :D

Regardless of where they put the tongue, the fastener is going where its going if using a standard floor gun. It would be angling in above the tongue so the "extra" sanding would be a moot point to me. What product are you talking about?

As already mentioned tongues are lower than center anyway. Could it be this company is making out like they are the only ones offering it?

My feeling is that the company is trying to say that you get one extra sanding out of the floor relative to the others.

And yes, that's my question. If you really want the nail to go where it does in a standard 3/4" flooring, then I would imagine you'd have to slightly modify the nail gun. Otherwise, what's the benefit.

You have PM regarding the product/company, since I don't beleive the board allows that type of information to be posted.

I didn't realize they had installation instructions on the site. It only calls for the standard nail guns. So, I'm not sure exactly what is going on with their flooring. Oh well, arketing is probably half the battle with so many johnny-come-lately sites nowadays selling flooring.
