Over the last few months I have seen a few different brands of Brazilian Cherry. Some have very smooth finishes where the natural grain has been sanded off. Others have the natural grain visible. Also some brands are finished on both sides and others are not.

Are any of these signs of a bad finish?

Thanks,

KRV

When buying imports, it is wise to purchase from a reputable dealer who will stand behind the product he sells IF there should be a problem. Your questions are sorta obscure. If you are concerned with the quality, keep looking or ask the dealer for a copy of your warranty. On imports, the quality is all over the place. And when the flooring is finished on the bottom, that is usually a sign it has been manufactured in China.

Thanks Gary,

Apparently the little "natural grain" is actually the aluminum oxide finish. It seems that the AO actually bubbled up and colapsed causing those little marks up and down the boards. The name of the manufacturer of that wood has been banned on this board 'if you know what I mean'. It was their lower tier 25 year warrantied product...but they didn't even have the wood labled as such and called it a direct shipment in from Brazil.

Interesting to know that the 2 sided finish is actually from China. The stuff I saw was really nice with long straight boards and completly smooth hard finishes. China quality? probably a hit or miss just like Brazil made products.

Well if you can get a product that is coated with aluminum oxide then that would be a great one to go with. Aluminum Oxide is made from rubies and rubies are the second hardest thing known to man, first being diamonds. It's very scratch resistant which is why they use it on laminate products.
