I was on another forum and got some bad advice so I decided to come here. I have a 3/4" oak floor done in the traditional finish stained with 3 coats of polyurathane. the floor is 2 years old, now that we are baby sitting our 1 year old grand child and she is now walking, she frequently drops and drags her toys around the floor. so I noticed light scratches in the top surface. I was told that using oooo steel wool and paste wax would solve the problem, well, it did seem to take care of most of the scratches, however now where ever you walk, whether it be socks or shoes it leaves a foot print all over the floor. it actually is worse now than with the scratches. I followed procedure on the wax, used it lightly with the steel wool, allow it to dry 15 minutes then buffed with home buffer, (light model not commercial) any suggestions on what to do , was I given the wrong advice, ? should I remove the wax>? how ? thanks in advance. G

Remove the wax....the technique you were given only applies to waxed floors, not urethane. Not only will it not do anything for the scratches, it can be very slick and very dangerous, especially if you have young children on it.
All floors will scratch, dent, etc., and over time the urethane will dull as well....it's part of having a hardwood floor. Once a floor is several years old, it is recommended to have it recoated to fill in scratches and restore the gloss. In the meantime, do what you can to limit the scratching (furniture protectors, rugs in the highest traffic areas, etc.), but you have to live with some of it.

WOW thats some advice you were given. Yes, mineral spirits and elbow grease are the removal products of choice, and do it soon before baby slips and injures herself.
