Are you buying used ?
I have owned a bunch over the years and have never had anything go motor wise other than a capacitor.

I have rebuilt many (bearings, switches, caps) even one from the 70's. use a booster box and stay in the recommended voltage range. replace wear parts and don't over tighten your belts. you can run the same one for decades if you take care of it. mine is from 87.
