I'm looking for a levelling compound that I could use under an 8" heart pine floor that will be face nailed with cut nails.

The existing floor has 2 ridges the length of the room over the girders. There is a layer of 5/8" plywood over 1" x 6" boards (at a diagonal).

I'm thinking about levelling up the floor by installing 1 or 2 layers of 1/4" plywood beside the ridges, then using a levelling compound to fill from the edge of the new plywood (1/4" deep) to the high point of the ridge (0" deep).

I'm concerned about using a levelling compound that won't shatter when it is nailed through. Can anyone recommend a levelling compound that would work in this application?

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Bill

I dont know if there is one but I use non cushioned sheet vinyl scraps to level floors sometimes. I make strips that get wider and wider on each strip til I am level . Youll have to experiment. Thats how I learned.

Also if your new floor will be at a 90 degree angle to the gap and the gap isnt to big you can just span the gap

Wood is pretty ridgid over small gaps.
