I have a pretty big area (3'x3') that has a 3/8" valley. I will be doing a glue down installation of engineered wood. I have read that I can use use self leveling compound (something like Mapei PlaniPatch) or shingles. Which is better? My intuition tells me the self leveling compound is better but I am by no means an expert so I would GREATLY appreciate anyone's opinion on this. Thanks in advance.

Use the compound, shingles are for levelling when doing a nail down application

There is only one portland cement compound, that I would trust not to break and crumble over a wood substrate, and that is ARDEX Feather Finish.

Great! Thank you for the input everyone. I took a look at Ardex and I am a bit confused. Is Ardex the same as Henry? Do you like the Ardex stuff more than PlaniPatch? I read one of your posts from back in 2006 in which you recommended PlaniPatch.

By the way, where can I buy Ardex/Henry product in Socal? I searched Lowe's and Home Depot website but could not find it.

If you use planipatch over wood, mix with their additive, not water. Planipatch is fine over concrete, but wood, it is Ardex for me.

Ardex will be found at a flooring distributor in your area, not a big box store.
The ARDEX website, should have a list where to purchase.

According to OP, this is a glue down app.
