My hardwood manufacture says to use Portland cement as the leveler. I don't know if that refers to using their adhesive product or not. However I'm rather hesitant about using plain cement to fill in the low spots. Is using the self levelers that are sold at the big box stores okay? They do cost about 3x as much?

i leveled a cement floor recently using ardex floor leveling. i then covered the floor with ceramic tiles. however, i wondered if i could have got away cheaper (ardex is expensive) using something else.

whatever you use, be sure to use the primer for better adhesion.

Portland cement, is not the adhesive!

Go to ARDEX.com
mapei.com
floorprep.com

You will see what you need and the instructions on how to use it, to see if your in way over your head.

Yes, they can be costly. It is right at a $1 per pound for latex fortified portland cement.
