I am putting bamboo floating floors in my house and I have a hallway that has a wall on one side but the other side has an overlook with a railing that looks onto the foyer downstairs. I'm wondering what the best advice is for putting the flooring down. Im assuming I wouldn't use quarter round, because I don't really have a baseboard for it to attach to. I guess I would jist cut nice clean pieces that i can put up against the edge nice and tight. But, if there's no quarter round, there isn't anything there to apply pressure to secure the end pieces nice and firm. So should I glue them down or is there some other kind of transition piece or method that should be used?

Thanks in advance.

A bull-nose reducer will have a rabbit for the expansion space. It will need to be either glued or glued and nailed adjacent to the flooring.
Remember that if you add flooring at the top of stairs you will probably cause the riser height of the top step to "become out of code". All the riser heights need to be within 3/8ths of an inch in height for safety.

Thanks so much for the information.

This particular area that I'm talking about is not actually on the stairs. It's on the 2nd floor, but it's in a hallway that's kind of like a balcony that looks out onto the foyer on the 1st floor. I've attached a picture to hopefully better explain. Image.

I'm not familiar with what a "rabbit" is. I have bullnosing that I'm using for the steps, but like I said, this isn't actually on the steps.

Thanks again for your help.

Floating floors suck for this application. You have two options. You can use a 'T' transition threshold there, which will look lousy in my opinion, OR you can rabbet underneath your existing sill plate, so the wood can slide beneath it. You need a jamb saw to do this properly. Here's a video demonstrating your issue:

Thank you so much!!!! It does seem like this is the best way. I was surprised at the strange looks I got from the guy at the flooring store when I asked about how to do this. They sold me a reducer that almost works, but it's not a perfect fit so you either end up with a gap where the reducer meets the top of the sill plate, which is noticeable as you're walking up the stairs, or a gap where it meets the floor. This is a little extra work, but I think it's ultimately the best option. Thank you again!
