This was sent to me by email with the issue being how it was installed. The gist of the issue is...well obvious...

The Message

I've hired a highly recommended flooring contractor who has done an unbelievably bad job racking a new installation of nearly 2000 square feet of glued down Lauzon floors. He says that it's Lauzon's fault because they didn't ship the proper color and size variations for it to come out any other way. I don't really know, I just want it done right.

He says it can be fixed by cutting out and replacing several boards, but I'm not confident. Am I right to be concerned that this is the wrong method of fixing the problem?

My answer would have to be no. It's obvious there wasn't much attention to color mixing. Stair stepped rows of light and dark boards. I'm guessing they were thinking of mixing when it was being installed (probably sorted out stacks of light and dark colored boards) and installed them one by one from each pile but didn't step back and really look at it? But how can it be missed on 2,000 square feet?

There's also one thing about being highly recommended but the question always is who shows up at the door to do the work? However, I'm not sure if if was a company or a one man band.

That is some very poor racking/mixing. Looks like it was definatley sized, stacked, and racked.
Lauzon is one of the few MFG that are typically problem free. We have all had those mills that put 4-5 different sized boards per bundle/pallet (most unfinished cherry only has 5-6 lately) just takes longer to mix them up and make it look random

I haven't put in Lauzon in quite some time..but i do remember there being issues with lengths.

I was told then by a distributor that it was because they weed otu so much waste..never bought that one

they often package similar and shorter lengths....longest being 3 feet..

don't know why..

although precisely milled and well constructed..i think it is way over priced for the product and this is one of the issues I see as a result.

another issue i have seen with products milled this way is H patterns developing because lengths all short and too similar..

for me that is a manufacturing problem..you are putting too much
responsibility on human eyes and hands during install.

sure better mixing could have been done, but that's like saying they could mill more assorted lengths..

breaking up that awful stair step by replacing a few boards is wht I would do also. Im surprised he didnt notice it beforehand. It almost looks like it was separated and done intentionally for some unforeseen reason. The fact that 95% of the end joints are 3" apart doesnt help either, lord learn how to rack a floor out properly.

I'm with you on that!

With that, he also has it going with a length pattern. Stair stepping the same size boards. That with the length size / to color, it jumps out at you.

He is going to have to take out rows, to scramble that size to color wood floor.

I'm going to pick hickory.

The dark boards look hickory.
I need a bigger monitor to see it better.

That floor looks like a stair stepped zebra

I don't see how you would make that floor look presentable by individual plank replacement, or even replacing rows.
