I vote "vertical" assuming that will allow the floor to be perpendicular to the joist direction.

Crossing the joist like dennis said, which I'm assuming would be parallel to the stair treads.

The joist are running parallel to the longest landing passage...i.e perpendicular to the threads...so do i only have a choice to install horizantal or diagonal (reference to screen view)

What I mean by that is the flooring would run parallel to the treads. Your question is more of a technical question for an installer because we have guidelines we're to supposed to follow when giving out advice. The flooring should either cross the joist, or run diagonal, if one has a 3/4" subfloor and the joist spacing is 16" OC or greater.

What do you have up there for a subfloor and joist spacing?

I dont think I would install diagonal in this totally right angled space; to me it would seem out of place.
Keep in mind that this being a hallway, it will have the most traffic in the house. With that in mind, I think you have to stay "in the box" on this one and lay it parallel with the stair treads to avoid squeaks, etc. that may arise if you install parallel to the joists.
Alternately, additional plywood sub-floor would allow for a vertical installation, but may create awkward transitions at the doorways, as well as alter the rise too much at the bottom stair.
Good luck
