The following pic is my own photoshop version of the various options I have to complete my landing. The wooden stairs are still raw and unfinished.

[albumimg]40[/albumimg]

Here is the dilemma: which option is best?

Let me explain:
The main living room is being finished using Birch hardwood flooring with an angled design pattern. The steps have been chosen as Maple to match the wood type. They will be simply clear coated, and I expect it to then look closer to the main hardwood floor.

I'm not sure what to do on the landing though?

These two steps + landing are part of a stairway into the basement which continues behind the closed door. The steps behind the door into basement are carpeted currently and will remain so. The door is usually open, but you don't really see the carpeted stairs leading down until you enter the doorway. So they are hidden from view.

But these first two steps + landing you see above are part of the living room open concept, which are in full view, and so the thoughts are:

1.) It's a stairwell, so it should all be uniform to flow properly. So cover it in the same wood as the steps.

..OR..

2.) It's part of a stairwell, but in the main floor area, and should contain the same hardwood and pattern as the main floor to flow with that instead.

I only get one shot at this, and your expert advice would be appreciated.

Which design option for the stair landing would you recommend?

I would go with option B, but that is simply my opinion!

Why can't you cover the steps? Are they in as good of shape as the new flooring going down? Could you cut the nosing and install the same flooring on the steps as well as the landing?

I suppose I could install the same flooring anywhere I like. But my understanding is that proper steps need to look like what you see.

We actually rebuilt the steps with Maple so that it will match the main Birch flooring once we clear coat it.

I just wonder if Option 'B' makes it look like I had too much hardwood floor and went crazy with flooring everything.

This is my first time doing hardwood floors and so I'm not sure what the "normal" convertions are for such a design layout as I have.

Thanks for your input though. ;)

I guess it would depend on whether you are going to finish out the basement somewhere down the road. Having said that I like to see the same material used on stairs.

I don't plan to convert the basement to hardwood.

So did you mean "same material used" as in the Option 'B' pic?

Yes, that is what I was trying to say. I like option C too.

Are you saying that those maple stair parts will look like birch after they are done being finished? I hope so because if their going to look like what you have posted, I don't care for any of the examples. If they do match in color and graining, then I'd choose option B, which would be exactly like D IF the maple matches the birch, which I'm not convinced it will.
