Hello,

I'm looking to put the laminate on my stairs, but my steps all have a nose that sticks out about 3/4 of an inch. The stair nose I bought with my flooring is designed for stairs that haven't a nose already.

Someone suggested to me I buy a metal stair nose, for each step, and it would cover everything up. My only concern is whether or not that would look ok? Has anyone used metal on their wood steps, if so does it look alright. The wood is Oak, the metal silver.

What is usually done in these cases, I'd need a fairly simple solution if there is one.

My next question is, what do you do with the bottom part of the stair nose? Just leave it alone?

Thanks,
Grant

You need to cut those nosings back flush with the risers. Read this:

Or fur the riser out to meet the tread overhang.

Yep, another solution. But care needs to be exercised when going this route for the following reasons. You will extend the run of the tread by the depth of the nosing overhang. This could cause the rise/run ratio to be off a little. But mostly, if there are side skirt boards, the new nosing may end up extending past those boards, which looks real bad.

Thanks.

Is having laminate stairs alright? How slippery is it, it's only a small staircase, 5 steps.

I've also heard the nosings break pretty easily.

Wilsonart makes stair treads. I won't put any other laminate on steps. They all require you to use that overlap nosing. Not only does it look like a steaming pile of dookie, it is unsafe.
