Hello first of all and thank you for looking!

I'm new to this forum but it was the first result I had returned in Google. I own a house built in 1925. The Wife and I pulled up any carpet except for one room in the house and the floors in here are very nice and can be refinished with some tender loving care.

It has Red Oak throughout the 1'st floor of the house with thinner older 2 3/8", and then in the kitchen it has thicker 2 3/8" x 3/4" what looks to be either Red Oak Select or White Oak Select. The 2nd floor has all Red Oak Select 2 3/8' x 3/4'.

In the Kitchen there was plywood nailed down I'm guessing sometime in the 70s right over top of the hardwood floor and then Linoleum over top of that. I tore up the linoleum and the plywood and loved the floor. I've done carpentry extensively in my life time so I started researching and started refinishing the floor.

My wife wanted to stain the floor to match the Red Oak around the house and at first I said no but then I started noticing that there was a significant amount mind you a lot less then when I started refinishing, of little blackish scratch perhaps marks still left. At that point I told her ok we'll stain it.

I have a picture where you can see the spots that made me decide to stain it that I was talking about but I didn't upload it, tell me if you want me to. I figured that one wouldn't matter to much for what I'm asking here.

I picked a English chestnut oil based min wax wood stain. I stained by hand and everything looks good.

Pic of floor after sanding / mineral spirits and a coat of pre-stain and stain:

Except a few spots around the fridge and stove area.

Picture of the area I'm concerned with before moving forward with oil based minwax high build Poly on the floor:

My question is this. What should I do right here at this spot? Should I just go ahead and hit that spot with the sander again in those areas and then re-vacuum / tack cloth with mineral spirits / re-vacuum etc. and then hit it with the stain again right there?

I don't know if that is wax or grease or what to be honest and I couldn't see it when I was done refinishing the floor or, sanding it all the way rather.

Thank you for any advice you can offer etc...

I may be going crazy here, but this looks a bit like yellow pine to me. I may be wrong and it's much easier to tell in person. Generally when we do a pine w/ a stain, we add a conditioner in first to open the pores.

Also, not sure if you sanded the floor w/ 3 grits (finer) each time. It looks like the problem area wasn't sanded properly or fine enough and hence the stain is not penetrating correctly, and my gut is to resand the area (or perhaps the whole section.

And, even though I mentioned that we normally do a conditioner, I wouldn't do that on just part of the floor as it will prob. look different.

Hope that helps.

What kind if sander did you use? Im guessing a square buffer or U Sand from a rental store or HD?

The floor wss not sanded deep enough and you made it worse using a conditioner.

I assume you applied te conditioner with a rag?
It shows. What i see is old finish still impregnated in the wood.the conditioner was to heavy and stain didnt penetrate properly.

Strt over and use a drum sander

That seam in the floor where the different widths hit each other needs something. Maybe a feature strip or sumpin. It's freakin me out.
