Hi Everybody, this is my first msg. First off, you guys are true professionals and I respect the job you do. By far this is the best site I have ever been to in regards to solid information.
I am installing a floating Kahrs floor (Ash woodlock) in a cottage we have at the Lake Erie shore. Approx 800-900 sq ft, on plywood subfloor over crawlspace. The crawlspace has plastic laid down and there is no overt moisture problem. I am laying the floor down using Floor Muffler underlayment, which is a moisture barrier/sound barrier/underlayment. I know Kahrs argues this will void warrantly, but Floor Muffler says they will honor it...(anyway, what are the odds that anybody ever collects on these warranties anyway?) In any regard, I was sold on the closed-cell feature of this underlayment, seems to really give good base, hide imperfections, etc. I go backpacking and closed-cell foam is what you want to lay your sleeping bag on....I have not used the combo products but I think this stuff was a little hard to wrestle with--any comments on Floor Muffler?? This cabin is not heated in the winter. In late Oct/early Nov, the cottage is closed up, water turned off, and pipes drained and antifreeze added, elec turned off, and door is closed for the season. In April/May, I open it up again. In the summer, it is not air conditioned. So, the temp over a year can vary from -10 or so to +99, with humidity to match. In other words, no temp or humidity control. That being said, the changes do occur slowly over the course of the season, i.e. the temp and humidity change with the ambient temp outside. So in most cases the gradual cool down, deep freeze, and then gradual warm up (I do have elec baseboard heat and propane Franklin-type stove for chilly fall and spring days). I installed 3/4 in Maple kitchen cabinets and no problems at all after 4 yrs. Anybody install in a situation like this? Any issues? I was most worried about expansion, etc., so that was my reasoning to go with an engineered floater in the first place. Hopefully FloorMuffler will protect me from moisture, and I was extremly generous with expansion space--nowhere is my space less than 1/2 in, and in most areas almost 3/4 in was allowed. I am only about 50% done right now, may post some pics next time. By the way this is replacing 30 yr old carpet which was hideous in this environment. Comments welcome, I figure there must be other installations in a similar situation. Is this gonna work? Thanks!

Hard to say but I will add this. If you intend to use the cabin in the winter, bring the temp up slowly. Same thing when you open up in the spring. A sudden, dramatic temperature and humidity change is asking for problems for sure. Allow the floors to be brought up to comfort range gradually. Of course, Kahrs will not honor any claim under this scenario, me thinks.
