We are looking forward to putting in a new hardwood floor in our 1955 Ranch. The living room is very long (about 26 feet) and the room next to it is the dining room/family room area also a big room but kind of perpindicular to the LR. (like an L shape). We were planning to change direction of the hard wood (which will be put on a nice floor of plywood (maybe a bit nicer than plywood-- its already there).
Well, we found out that our joises change direction but not at the threshold of a doorway between these two rooms-- the change occurs in the middle of the 26 foot living room. So our question is: Does it matter if we change direction at the threshold? -- There will be about 25% of the job in the wrong direction -- we understood you are supposed to install the floor perpendicular to the joists. I heard from some folks that it doesn't matter if you have a plywood subfloor anyhow. Just double checking.
