Hi,

I am looking to lay a floor for our interior and exterior ( pool deck etc. )

We are in a very dry climate and looking for a woodfloor that can do well interior and exterior and are wondering if IPE would be suitable for this?

Also thinking of leaving the IPe floor unfinished for the interior - just oil since we love the look of it - is this crazy?

Thanks for any advise

If there was a wood that could be installed inside and out, it would be IPE (commonly called Brazilian Walnut) Keep in mind, it will weather much faster outside than inside and in a short time, it will look different anyway. You could use the same finish inside as outside. Perhaps Sikkens Cetol or Penofin. It will need to be slightly gapped outside to allow for drainage on those rare Vegas rain storms. Pretty much any wood that can be used outside could be used inside as well EXCEPT treated wood. Clear heart Redwood, most south american hardwoods, cedar, even clear doug fir if maintained.

I have Ipe inside and plan on using outside for a deck eventually. You definitely want differently milled Ipe inside vs outside (T+G inside, decking planks outside). Also the outside planks are not kiln dried, which is probably what you want for that. If you love the look of oiled Ipe, I would test some Waterlox. I think they have a version for outside as well, so you might have a chance of keeping it from changing color outside.
