Sheet vinyl can tack a beating and get burned, torn, ripped and scratched. It's not impervious to damage. Just a bit more water resistant than wood. All wood floors can and will dent and scratch. That's a fact. Consider one of the "scraped" or distressed varieties if that looks ok to you. It will hide the inevitable scrapes and dents better. I must say, sounds like you are a prime candidate for a laminate floor with those young ones around. Nothing holds up like a laminate except a good ceramic or porcelin tile.
