Last year I installed wood flooring thru-out most of my house. (This forum was a lot of help) This year I would like to do one more room - the front room where there is a the front entry door.

The problem:
It will raise the height of the floor the thickness of the wood flooring plus the underlayment height. My front door will not quite clear the floor to open. I suppose I could replace the door. It needs replacing anyway. But I'm wondering if it would then take a custom door? And even if the door did clear the flooring, I wouldn't know how to fit the wood flooring up to or under the door threshold?

I'm sure you guys deal with wood flooring and front doors all the time. Any words of advise?

thanks

Will the flooring be higher than the door threshold? What's the underlayment you are referring to?

The underlayment I was referring to was going to be something like 1/4 luan to give me a nice smooth working surface. (that's what I did for the rest of the house.) Even if I left that off, the 3/4 flooring and the paper overlay would make the door scrape the flooring.

I could have a pre-hung door assembled and would have to remove my current door and replace it. I haven't inquired about a storm door. I guess I'd need a new storm door as well.

Why is it every project in an old house turns out to be more complicated than you originally envisioned????

A friend made another suggestion: She suggested doing a tile entry and transitioning to hardwood. That way I wouldn't need a custom door at all and you'd have an area to walk in with "wet shoes" before stepping on the hardwood.

Why not plane down the door bottom and raise or build up the threshold or install a thin metal threshold on top of the existing threshold? There are all sorts of interesting door sweeps. TOH demoed one that is cut into the door bottom and drops down to seal when the door is closed.
